Passionate About Supporting Others

Hi, and welcome to my website. My name is Dr. Luis Nobrega. I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist practicing in New York City.

My primary goal is to help my clients lead happy, meaningful lives. I believe in developing an atmosphere of trust, compassion and support.  Together, we will address whatever challenges you may be facing, and will develop and work towards concrete goals and solutions.

A Little About Me

I earned my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Yeshiva University. I am originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and have lived in New York for more than twenty years. Because of my personal background, I am comfortable conducting psychotherapy in either English or Portuguese. I offer my clients the ease of being very centrally located - my office is on 5th Avenue, close to Herald Square and the Empire State Building.

Training
Training & Focus Areas

As part of my training I have worked in many different clinical settings, including two of New York’s largest city hospitals, as well as community clinics, university counseling centers, and research centers.  Through my work in these varied settings, I have become skilled at treating a wide variety of psychological issues. I have experience working with young adults and adult clients from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Prior to becoming a psychologist, I was a corporate attorney in Brazil and in New York.  Drawing from that experience, I also support clients struggling with career issues and challenges.

Combining my training and experience in different treatment modalities and orientations (psychodynamic theory, systems theory, and a number of evidence-based treatments), I will work flexibly and collaboratively with you, tailoring therapy to your specific needs. I have experience helping both Individuals and Couples with a variety of issues, including:

  • Depression and Anxiety

  • Self-esteem/self-confidence

  • Identify formation

  • Intimacy and relationship difficulties

  • Sexuality and sexual orientation

  • LGBTQ issues (the coming out process, family difficulties, dealing with stigma and homophobia, etc.)

  • Health related concerns/living and dealing with serious medical conditions (eg. cancer, HIV/AIDS).

  • Life transitions

  • Loss and grief

  • Career challenges

Questions
Questions About Therapy

Unsure about beginning therapy?

Beginning psychotherapy and/or finding a new therapist can sometimes be a daunting process.   Please feel free to give me a call so that, during an initial free phone consultation, we can have a brief conversation about the issues you are dealing with, any concerns you may have, and discuss scheduling an appointment.

What should I expect when I book an appointment?

Your first in-person appointment will consist of an initial assessment.  You and I will use this opportunity to talk about the challenges and/or difficulties you may be experiencing, as well as your reasons for seeking therapy. We will also discuss what you are hoping to achieve in therapy and begin exploring ideas of what may help you. We will talk about how I work and you may have a better sense as to whether you feel my style and experience will suit your needs. You will be under no obligation to make further appointments if you are not certain I am the right professional for you. If this is the case, I will do my best to refer you to other professionals or other appropriate resources.

Fees
Fees & Insurance

My fees are consistent with those practiced by other licensed clinical psychologists in the New York area. I do not currently accept any insurance plans directly; however, if your insurance coverage includes out-of-network benefits, you may seek reimbursement for a portion of the cost of therapy. I am happy to discuss these issues with you, and to assist with the necessary paperwork required for requesting reimbursement from your insurance company.  In an effort to make psychotherapy accessible for all, I also work on a sliding scale basis with a restricted number of clients whose financial resources are limited.

In an initial 15-minute free phone consultation we will have the chance to talk about fees and you will able to ask any related questions you may have.
